early decay detection

By using the Diagnodent we are able to detect early occlusal decay before it increases in size, thus minimizing tooth preparation. The Diagnodent uses a laser to measure the fluorescence in your tooth. As the laser is moved over the chewing surface of your tooth, the laser is able to read this fluorescence. If your tooth is healthy, it will indicate little or no fluorescence. If decay is detected, the unit will display higher readings of fluorescence.

The diagnodent does not have the ability to detect decay through current restorations or sealants. It cannot detect decay on surfaces other than the chewing surface, where 60% of all decay does occur.
